•学习和聆听的技巧,并准确地遵照指导有序地做事;

•同理心 - 识别你的感受;

•情绪管理 - 管理感受,平静下来;

Why I Like Social Emotional Learning

Hello, my name is Adeline Sui. My Chinese name is 眭君懿.I am a 5th grade student at Medina Elementary School. Medina Elementary is in the Bellevue  School District, Washington State. Today I want to share an interesting class with you. It is called Social Emotional Learningor SEL. SEL is not just stuff like classes with classwork or homework, it is about emotions inside you and how to control them. I think this is very fascinating, because it teaches you about everyday life, linking between you, your friends, and family.   I feel SEL is about knowing how you’re feelingright now, and if you are about to do something based on your emotion, first stop, think about the consequences of what you’re about to do and control yourself. By the way, this July my school district was named District ofDistinction for SEL Initiative 2017. I am really proud of it.

When I entered Kindergarten at Medina, that was the first time I got taught about SEL. I think part of the curriculum was blended into the classroom. On a wall, under the Smart Board, there was a poster matching several feelings to the expressions on people’s faces. There were also tips and reminders about what is appropriate and what is inappropriate when dealing with people. SEL classeswere really interactive, as we played out what we would do in situation revolving around what had learned that day and previous.  I heard that middle school and highschool also have similar classes. That is exciting!

The main things we learned from SEL:

Skillsf or Learning-listening and followinginstructions precisely and in order.

Empathy-identifying your feelings.

Emotion Management- Managing feelings, calmingdown.

Problem Solving

Here is a story of mine that shows how SEL helped me.

When I tried to do a front flip on the gymnastic bars on the school playground for the first time, it was not easy for me. My friend, Kiki* helped by pushing me(She had my permission to push me because I helped by pushing her) . We worked as a team. As I was practicing, I got stuck in the middle of one, and I kind of panicked; but I cooled down shortly and held my panic inside. I focused on my situation. Another of my friends, Allyson*, who was on the other gymnastic bar beside me, cheered and encouraged me by saying things like: “You can do it!”, “You’re almostthere!”, and “Just lean your weight to your head, and then relax your legs!” That helped me a lot to find my orientation. And I finally got there! Yeah! When I landed, our friends hugged me and congratulated me. I felt that SEL injectedgood behaviors into me and my friends. We did not laugh at other’s embarrassment. We helped.  I adhered to Skills for Learning, by listening to other’s guidance. There was also Emotion Management where I had to keep panic in check.

My school’s motto is: Be Kind, Be Safe, Do Your Best, Help the Rest. We had a pride song. Its lyrics is:

We are the proud Medina Tigers,

We always strive to do our best.

On the fields or at our desks,

Giveus a job and we will pass the test!

We are responsible and caring,

Watch us at work and at play!

So,give a great big cheer,

For Tigers,far and near.

Tiger Pride all the way.

Indeed, they reflect well what SEL holds forand SEL helps us be great Medina tigers. I hope you like my writing, and thank you for giving part of your time to read this.

*I hid my friend’s names as I did not ask for their permission to release theirnames. But the stories are still true.
